Empowering Transition to Independence: ‘My Life, My Way’ Program at Community Vision

Building Essential Life Skills for Independent Living After School

We understand that the transition from school life to “adult life” can be a difficult one, regardless of whether you are a person living with a disability or not. Going from having support and a routine environment five days a week to seemingly having none all of a sudden can be overwhelming. That is why we are proud to introduce a new program to support you in the transition to living independently after school – we call this program “My life, my way.”

The “My life, my way” program aims to equip you with the tools you need to develop and learn lifelong skills, easing the transition from school to independent living. Term 1 offers development in skills such as washing clothes, cooking meals, cleaning your home, gardening and grocery shopping.

So, what does this mean for you? Not only do we expect the new program to offer ample opportunity for hard skills development, our team is also looking forward to witnessing the personal growth that you, our customers, will undoubtedly experience. Finishing school is a significant achievement, but it comes with lots of pressure and expectations. Our passion behind developing “My life, my way” came from the understanding that leaving school can invoke a feeling of losing a sense of community, routine and belonging. We hope that the program offers some relief to our customers who may be experiencing these feelings and, in turn, relieves some of the pressure to be fully independent immediately after finishing school.

Better yet, this program is not exclusively for customers who have just finished school. We understand that not everyone has the same education pathway and post-school experience, so the “My life, my way” program caters to anyone who is of school-finishing age and is ready to start their journey to gaining independence.

For your friends and family, we hope that they can enjoy witnessing your skill and personal development as much as we will. It’s not just about getting you to help out with dishes at home, it’s about seeing you step into the next chapter of your life with the confidence you deserve. As the term goes on, families can expect to see a shift in their loved one as they learn new life skills on their own terms and with the foundation of a well rounded program with plenty of opportunity to develop throughout the rest of the year.

Term 1 runs from Monday to Friday 9am-3pm at our Kingsley Centre, with focus on household skills and relationship building. If you’re interested in finding out more information for you or your loved one, get in touch with us now and express your interest. We hope to see you there!
