Community Resources for People Living with Dementia
On Wednesday 14th August 2019, the Honourable Mick Murray MLA, Minister for Seniors and Ageing, joined us at Roseworth Primary School in Girrawheen to officially launch WA’s first travelling community dementia bus.
The official launch marked the beginning of the second phase of the A Roast to Remember fundraising campaign, which has to date raised enough funds to purchase the van and its exterior wrap. The community dementia bus will provide resources for people living with dementia – including transportable educational services, desperately needed dementia respite care, support and access to new technology for those living with dementia and vital dementia education for schools.
With the dream of the community dementia bus now a reality, we are raising enough money to fit out the bus, to purchase advanced technology for the bus and to hire the two staff required to service it. We aim to visit a minimum of two locations each week covering metro, regional and rural WA.
The bus can visit community centres or people’s homes and will provide the opportunity for the wider community to trial some of the technological innovations developed for those living with dementia (such as Virtual Reality). Research shows technology and dementia are highly compatible. Likewise, there’s a beneficial link between virtual reality and dementia and between assistive technology and dementia.
The inside of the bus will be fully air conditioned and fitted out with sensory activities for dementia, including materials to help reduce frustration, stress and anxiety. There will be tea and coffee facilities and a pull-out awning on the exterior of the bus. Manned by two staff, the bus will allow carers and loved ones of those living with dementia to get some respite as well as seek advice and learn new therapy techniques or methods of dealing with dementia.
